Background: The discovery of various ancient artifacts in the northern coastal region (Pantura) of Central Java, particularly in Kendal Regency, highlights significant potential for the development of paleontology and the preservation of local geological heritage. Although this region is not widely recognized as a primary site for fossil discoveries—unlike Grobogan or Sragen—observations conducted by the founder of Balai Konservasi Artefak Desa in June–July 2025 revealed a diverse range of notable fossil findings. These include vertebrate bones, presumably from a bovine species, as well as imprints of fruits and grass stems, seeds, shark teeth fossils, insect imprints, ancient root traces, and small marine organisms. These findings not only reflect past biodiversity but also indicate a major shift in the landscape—from marine and swamp environments to the current limestone highlands. Objective: This study aims to explore local initiatives for preserving ancient artifacts through the establishment of Balai Konservasi Artefak Desa as a form of community-based conservation involving active public participation. Methods: The study employed a qualitative observational method, involving direct observation of discovery sites and the conservation practices carried out by local residents. Results: The results show that Balai Konservasi Artefak Desa plays a crucial role in preserving ancient objects at the community level. It serves not only as a repository and documentation center for artifacts but also as an educational hub that fosters collective awareness of the importance of conserving geological heritage. This initiative also supports the development of educational tourism and future research opportunities in geology and paleontology. Conclusion: Community-based conservation initiatives, such as Balai Konservasi Artefak Desa, are proven to be effective strategies for ensuring the sustainability of ancient resources. Active involvement of local communities serves as a vital foundation for preservation, education, and economic development through the sustainable utilization of natural heritage.
