Why Are RTIs Common in Prisons?
Respiratory Tract Infections (RTIs) remain the most frequent illness in correctional institutions. A 2025 study from Diponegoro University found that poor sanitation perception is strongly linked to RTI incidence among inmates.
📊 Key findings:
- Poor sanitation perception = significantly higher RTI risk
- Building conditions (p=0.02) & waste management (p=0.00) were strongly associated
- Room conditions (p=0.54) & drinking water (p=0.06) = not significantly related
- RTIs account for over 50% of all illnesses in Class IIA Kendal Prison. Overcrowding, poor waste disposal, and inadequate infrastructure make inmates more vulnerable to airborne infections.
💡 The study calls for WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) improvements to support SDG goals and protect inmate health.
